Indian Police Officer Batters Muslims Offering Friday Prayer

Amid rising anti-minority sentiment in India, a police officer was seen kicking and shoving Muslim men while they offered Friday prayers on the roadway in New Delhi's Inderlok area.

Now identified as Sub-Inspector Manoj Kumar Tomar of Delhi police, was seen beating Muslim men during prayers, in a video circulating on social media. Per media reports, Muslims prayed on the road near Inderlok metro station as nearby mosques were overcrowded. Sub-inspector Tomar arrives at the spot in the midst of the prayers, and is specifically seen hitting worshippers as they are seen kneeling on the ground.

Locals protested the sub-inspector's high-handedness. The footage also received global attention and condemnation. The officer was suspended with immediate effect per media reports, however Indian Muslim organisations are demanding permanent termination of his service.

Meanwhile, MK Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) of Delhi, stated an investigation into the incident is under way and further disciplinary action will be taken.
