Instagram Unveils Generative AI-Powered Background Editing Tool

Instagram's generative AI-powered backdrop editing tool has been made available to US users.

Ahmad Al-Dahle, Meta's lead for generative AI, stated on Threads that the tool will allow users to modify the backdrop of their photographs via suggestions for Stories.

When users touch the backdrop editing icon on a picture, preset prompts such as "On a red carpet," "Being chased by dinosaurs," and "Surrounded by puppies" appear. Users can also create their prompts to modify the backdrop.

When a user uploads a story with the freshly produced backdrop, others will receive a "Try it" sticker with the prompt to play with the picture production tool as well.

Snapchat unveiled a new service for its paying users earlier this week that allows them to create and exchange AI-generated photos. In August, the firm introduced Dreams, a new function that allows users to create imaginative pictures of themselves with various themes. Earlier this year, the social network enabled Snapchat+ users to create prompt-based backdrops.

Earlier this month, Meta made its 28 AI-powered characters available to US users across all of its applications — WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram—with support for Bing search and an improved context window. Simultaneously, the business introduced Imagine with Meta, a standalone AI-image generator driven by its model dubbed Emu.
