Two hospitals are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate prostate cancer diagnoses.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust says it will be the first in the UK to implement its AI tool, Pi, with its radiology staff.

The Trust has collaborated with Lucida Medical, a Cambridge-based firm, to implement the technology.

It is now in practice at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and Yeovil District Hospital.

Dr. Paul Burn, a consultant radiologist at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, described how it worked as "very simple."

He stated: "Within a few moments of the patient receiving their MRI scan, the Pi tool produces a number indicating the likelihood of malignancy. It also pinpoints the specific location of any prostate tumors."

"Our AI program aims to expedite the detection process for prostate cancer patients and prioritize those with the disease. It will also allow our radiologists to report on more patients each day, and in the future, we may be able to schedule the patient for a biopsy sooner," he added.
