The last two fugitives wanted by the UN’s IRMCT (International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals) for war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Rwandan genocide are deceased, according to a press release.

According to investigations, ‘Ryandikayo’ and Charles Sikubwabo died in 1998 after having fled Rwanda for the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).

In the last four years, the IRMCT has arrested two genocide suspects and confirmed the deaths of four other fugitives. This means that there are now no fugitives at large indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY), which were tribunals established by the Security Council to prosecute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The IRMCT is a successor court for the war crime tribunals for Rwanda and Yugoslavia, created to handle outstanding hearings and to pursue any remaining fugitives.
