United Nations General Assembly has thrown its support behind a Palestinian bid for full membership in the UN, recognizing Palestine as qualified to join and urging the Security Council to reconsider the matter favorably. This move, following a US veto in the Security Council, garnered significant global backing, with 143 member states voting in favor, nine against (including the US and Israel), and 25 abstentions.

While not granting full UN membership, the resolution grants Palestinians additional rights and privileges, such as a seat among UN members in the assembly hall. Notably, Palestine retains observer state status but will receive rights akin to a full member state, except for voting in the General Assembly and candidacy in UN organs like the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council.

This resolution marks a significant milestone, positioning Palestine as a qualified candidate for UN membership, subject to Security Council reconsideration.
