Apple has announced that its long-awaited Vision Pro headset will become available for sale in the United States on February 2.

Customers in the United States can pre-order the $3,499 (£2,749) mixed-reality device beginning in mid-January, but no date has been established for its release in the United Kingdom.

It is the company's first big new product introduction since the Apple Watch debuted in 2015.

After years of speculation during development, the business unveiled the headset in June 2023.

However, there have been concerns since then. According to the Financial Times, Apple's manufacturing prediction has been reduced by more than half, from one million to 400,000 units in 2024.

In addition to the release date, Apple said that the device will have 256GB of storage and that the headset's eye-tracking technology can monitor only one dominant eye for people who do not have full use of both eyes.

Interestingly, the company is attempting to distinguish the headset from other gadgets on the market by instructing developers to trademark their apps as "spatial computing."

"Don't describe your app experience as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), extended reality (XR), or mixed reality (MR)," it wrote in a blog post aimed at developers.

Apple has also created an online teaser showcasing characters from films wearing goggles and helmets, which appears to be an attempt to recapture the excitement around the iPhone's launch in 2007.

If successful, this might become a new multibillion-dollar source of revenue for Apple. However, given how many people around the world struggle to buy basic necessities, the exorbitant price tag is likely to remain a toy for the wealthy.
