Microsoft's chief artificial intelligence officer, Mustafa Suleyman, announced that the company will post job openings for "exceptional individuals" in the upcoming weeks and months. The company has not disclosed the number of positions that will be created.

Notably, Microsoft is an equity shareholder in OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, which also established an office in London in 2023. "There is an enormous pool of AI talent and expertise in the UK," Suleyman wrote in a blog post. "Microsoft AI plans to make an essential, long-term investment in the region as we begin hiring the best AI scientists and engineers for this new AI hub."

Google acquired DeepMind, a UK-based AI research group that Suleyman co-founded, in 2014.

Before joining Microsoft in March, he founded his own artificial intelligence start-up, Inflection AI, in 2022.

Jordan Hoffmann, an AI developer who has experience at both Inflection and DeepMind, will oversee operations at the new location, he added.

"Microsoft AI London will drive pioneering work to advance state-of-the-art language models and their supporting infrastructure," stated Suleyman.

A week after UK technology minister Michelle Donelan struck a deal with the US to work together on testing cutting-edge AI models, he also complimented the UK's "safety-first" approach to AI.

According to Mustafa Suleyman, chief of AI at Microsoft, the company will "push beyond the limits of what’s achievable with AI and extend its advantages to all individuals and organizations in the U.K."

According to Suleyman, the new UK office would "work extensively" with OpenAI employees, in which it has made significant investments.
